A 13 And 14 Year Old Arrested After Machete Attacks in Portage la Prairie


Portage la Prairie, October 18, 2023 - A series of alarming incidents took place in Portage la Prairie on October 15. RCMP responded to a number of machete attacks. At approximately 4:50 pm, police received a distressing report of an assault in the back lane of 1st Street Southwest. Upon arrival, they discovered a 21-year-old male from Long Plain First Nation with severe injuries caused by an edged weapon. He was promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention.


While investigating this incident, another call was received concerning two additional victims. A 15-year-old male, walking home, was assaulted by two youths armed with machetes who attempted to rob him of his personal belongings. The victim, too, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Simultaneously, a 14-year-old male, who had also fallen victim to the machete-wielding attackers, had managed to reach the hospital independently, where he contacted the police.


RCMP quickly identified the assailants as a 13-year-old male and a 14-year-old male, both residents of Portage. The 13-year-old is facing charges of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Robbery with an Offensive Weapon, and Assault with a Weapon. His 14-year-old accomplice is charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Assault with a Weapon, Robbery, Failure to Comply with a Probation Order, and Failure to Comply with a Release Order.


Both suspects are currently in custody, pending further legal proceedings. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about these incidents to come forward, aiding in a thorough investigation of these shocking events.
