A Busy First Day of 2023 For Winnipeg Police

Monday, January 2, 2023 - It was a busy first day of 2023 for the Winnipeg Police Service with a woman charged with arson and a man found with a gun.

Sunday evening just before midnight, police called to an apartment complex on Kennedy Street. While there, police spotted a large garbage bin fire at the rear of the building and called it in.

While investigating the matter, police learned about several fires set in different locations within the complex. Officers searched the area and located a woman matching the suspect's description on Balmoral Street.

Police said the suspect set fire to different locations within the complex before starting one in the rear of the building and setting fire to the garbage bin, causing approximately $2,000 in damages. Members of the WFPS contained the fires, and no injuries were reported.

A 28-year-old female from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:

- Arson Causing Damage to Property x 2

- Possession of Incendiary Material

- Possession of a Weapon

She was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.

Sunday at approximately 3:15 a.m., Police responded to a home on Copperwood Court because there was a report of a man armed with a gun. General Patrol officers from the West District, assisted by a Canine Unit, attended and arrested an adult male suspect outside of his residence without incident. Officers seized eight (8) firearms from the residence as evidence and in the interest of public safety. The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the suspect and owner of the residence became involved in a verbal argument with a 19-year-old female victim and a 23-year-old male victim in attendance for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Investigators learned the suspect brandished a handgun and racked the slide in front of the victims while directing them to leave his residence. The victims left the residence to safety and contacted police. A 48-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges: - Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition - Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations x 3 He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
