Brave Teenage Victim Escapes Harrowing Abduction and Assault; Suspect Apprehended


Winnipeg, September 25, 2023 – In a horrifying incident, a teenage girl narrowly escaped a traumatic abduction and sexual assault ordeal in the Spence neighbourhood area. On the evening of September 24, the victim, while walking in the 3000 block of Portage Avenue, was abducted at knifepoint by a male assailant.


The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Cory Lee Whalen from Winnipeg, forcibly took the victim to an undisclosed location, where she was subjected to multiple instances of sexual assault over several agonizing hours. Managing to break free, the survivor fled and sought help from a passerby, who provided her with a cellphone to call the authorities.


General Patrol officers promptly responded to the distress call at approximately 11:40 p.m. and initiated an investigation, which was then taken over by the specialized Sex Crimes Unit. Their diligent efforts led to the identification of Whalen as the prime suspect in this heinous crime.


Whalen now faces a slew of charges, including Sexual Assault with a Weapon (x3), Sexual Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon, Kidnapping, Administering a Noxious Substance with Intent to Endanger Life or Cause Harm, Forcible Confinement, Assault by Choking, Suffocating or Strangling, and Mischief Under $5000/Obstruction of Enjoyment.


Following his arrest, Whalen was taken into custody and is awaiting legal proceedings. The swift action of law enforcement and the victim's courage in escaping this terrifying situation have resulted in a significant breakthrough in the case, providing hope for justice for the survivor and the community at large.
