Elmwood Church Destroyed in Early Morning Fire

Wednesday, August 23, 2023 - An early morning fire in Elmwood closed streets to traffic and damaged a church to a point of no return.

Shortly before 4:00 a.m. this morning, Winnipeg Firefighters were called to the Spanish Church of God on Tweed Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. Due to the heavy fire conditions, crews could not enter the building. They fought the fire from the exterior using aerial ladders and handlines. The WFPS drone was used to help direct water streams and locate hot spots. The fire was declared under control at 5:49 a.m.

A neighbouring home was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. One firefighter suffered an injury while on scene and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not currently available; however, the building is partially collapsed and is expected to be a complete loss.
