Fire Crews Battle 6 Fires Overnight


Tuesday, August 8, 2023 - Winnipeg Firefighters had a busy night, responding to six structure fires in less than nine hours.

Riverbend Avenue At 8:32 p.m. on firefighters responded to a fire in a bungalow on Riverbend Avenue. At the scene, crews saw flames and smoke. Firefighters attacked the fire, declaring it under control at 8:50 p.m. Paramedics assessed one patient and no transportation to hospital was required. The home sustained damage from fire and smoke. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dufferin Avenue At 11:33 p.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant house on Dufferin Avenue. At the scene, crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside, using an aerial ladder. Crews declared the fire under control at 12:57 a.m. Due to the structural instability of the house, crews have arranged an emergency demolition. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Sherbrook Street At 12:53 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a house on Sherbrook Street. Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, declaring the fire under control at 1:11 a.m. Paramedics assessed one patient and transported them to hospital in unstable condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Lipton Street At 4:43 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house on Lipton Street. At the scene, crews saw flames and smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, declaring the fire under control at 5:14 a.m. All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team responded to the scene to help up to 12 residents find alternate temporary housing. A Winnipeg Transit bus responded to the scene to provide temporary shelter during the incident. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Selkirk Avenue At 4:49 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a one-storey house on Selkirk Avenue. At the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, and they declared the fire under control at 5:55 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Peguis Street At 5:35 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a four-unit townhouse on Peguis Street. At the scene, firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 6:11 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
