Incident Prompts Joint Response by WFPS and Winnipeg Police; IIU to Investigate

Winnipeg, October 24, 2023 - At approximately 9:50 a.m. yesterday, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an emergency on Arlington Street. The distress call was made concerning an woman who was in a state of medical crisis, displaying erratic and combative behavior.

Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders found the situation intensified by the presence of an individual wielding broken glass. Consequently, the WFPS urgently requested police intervention to ensure the safety of all parties involved.

Efforts were made by officers to administer sedation to the distressed female, who persisted in her combative behavior and even spat at the emergency responders. In a bid to control the situation, the officers physically restrained her.

Tragically, while still at the scene, the female experienced a severe medical event. She was promptly taken to the hospital in critical condition. She remains under medical care.

In light of the incident, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and will be assuming jurisdiction over the case.
