Man Detained After Alleged Knife Incident and Confrontation with Winnipeg Police

Winnipeg, November 17, 2023 - A distressing scene unfolded yesterday morning in the heart of Winnipeg, as authorities responded to a report of an armed male at a business on Main Street. The incident, which transpired around 9:50 a.m., led to a tense standoff between officers and the suspect.

Reports indicated that an adult male, armed with a knife, had purportedly attempted to stab an employee. Furthermore, it was revealed that four female victims managed to secure themselves in separate rooms within the establishment.

Upon arrival, officers were met with an uncooperative and non-compliant suspect, who remained armed and stationed in the lobby of the business. The male suspect, later identified as William Mini, 27, from Brandon, MB, had locked the front doors and defied commands from law enforcement to relinquish the weapon. Matters escalated as the suspect began to inflict harm upon himself.

During the intervention, Mini discharged a fire extinguisher toward the officers, leading them to deploy capsaicin (OC) spray and a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) to safely subdue and arrest the suspect. The individual was subsequently was taken to hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries.

The disturbance resulted in the evacuation of animals within the premises due to the discharge of the extinguisher and OC spray.

According to police reports, investigations revealed no prior connection between the suspect and the victims involved in the incident.

As a consequence of the altercation, William Mini faces a series of charges, including three counts of Assault with a Weapon, Assault of a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruction in Enjoyment. He is to be detained in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities aim to understand the motives behind the disturbing episode that unfolded on Main Street.
