Winnipeg, January 10, 2024 - Premier Wab Kinew and Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara have announced a significant step towards improving healthcare in Manitoba. The government will be adding 36 new acute care beds at St. Boniface Hospital, marking a crucial part of their broader strategy to address long wait times in emergency departments and enhance healthcare capacity across the province.

The premier emphasized that the government's top priority is to address staffing shortages in the healthcare sector. Every investment in increasing healthcare capacity will be closely aligned with efforts to bolster staffing levels. The new beds at St. Boniface Hospital, set to open in late March, will play a pivotal role in facilitating the transition of emergency department patients to other areas of care, ultimately reducing ER congestion.

Minister Asagwara highlighted the pressing issue of extended wait times in crowded emergency rooms due to years of healthcare cuts. The government's swift response to add more capacity to hospitals aims to provide patients with faster access to the care they need. Their approach is rooted in feedback from frontline staff and strategically adding beds throughout the healthcare system to alleviate pressure on emergency rooms.

Dr. Paul Ratana, emergency department medical director at St. Boniface Hospital, emphasized the importance of increasing inpatient capacity in reducing wait times. The new beds will free up emergency department space, allowing for quicker treatment of incoming patients.

Nicole Aminot, President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital, expressed support for initiatives prioritizing patient care and improving the overall patient experience.

This expansion at St. Boniface Hospital is part of a larger plan to increase acute care beds and staffing at major hospitals across Manitoba. In November 2023, the minister announced the addition of 31 new beds at Grace Hospital by the end of the 2024-25 fiscal year, with 10 beds earmarked for a new family medicine program. The Manitoba government remains committed to further investments aimed at stabilizing overstretched hospitals, ensuring that patients receive timely and efficient healthcare services.
