Manitoba honours outstanding educators with "Excellence in Education Awards"

Winnipeg, April 19, 2024 - Six exceptional educators have been bestowed with Manitoba’s Excellence in Education Awards in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the learning and development of students across the province, announced Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare.


Altomare emphasized the importance of acknowledging educators who demonstrate unwavering dedication and make a profound impact in the lives of students. "The award recipients have exhibited remarkable commitment to their students, fostering their academic success and cultivating classroom and school environments where students feel secure, valued, and motivated," stated Altomare.


The recipients of this prestigious accolade were carefully selected by a distinguished selection committee comprising representatives from the Manitoba School Boards Association, the Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools, and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning.


The recipients of Manitoba’s Excellence in Education Awards 2023-2024 are as follows:


  • Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education – Rebecca Okemow, from Strathclair Community School in the Park West School Division.

  • Outstanding New Teacher Award – Rachel Robinson, from Victor Mager School in the Louis Riel School Division.

  • Outstanding School Leader Award – Karen Duffield, from Shamrock School in the Louis Riel School Division.

  • Teaching Excellence Award: Saul Correia, from Collège Churchill High School in the Winnipeg School Division.

  • Miroslawa Demko, from Ralph Brown School in the Winnipeg School Division.

  • Tara Tuchscherer, from St. James Collegiate in the St. James Assiniboia School Division.


Minister Altomare underscored that since 2006, Manitoba has been honoring exceptional educators who forge meaningful connections with students and whose teaching methods have a profound and enduring impact on student achievement, engagement, and well-being.
