Manitoba Man Tries to Save Farmers Life in Tragic Accident

Russell, November 8, 2023 - A quiet rural road in the RM of Riding Mountain West turned into a scene of tragedy on November 3, 2023, when a combine harvester rolled over into a slough, resulting in the loss of a 55-year-old man's life.

At approximately 4:50 pm, Russell RCMP received a report of a combine harvester accident near the intersection of Provincial Road 592 and Road 140N. According to investigators, the victim, identified as a 55-year-old man from Roblin, was operating the combine heading southbound on PR 592 when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The combine, navigating a downhill portion of the road, lost control due to icy conditions. Tragically, it slid into a steep embankment before overturning and coming to rest upside down in the slough waters.

A witness to the incident, who happened to be operating another combine just ahead of the victim, displayed remarkable bravery. Upon seeing the accident unfold, the Good Samaritan leaped into the frigid waters and swiftly pulled the victim from the submerged cab of the combine. The witness provided crucial medical assistance to the victim until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived at the scene.

Despite the valiant efforts of the witness and the timely response of EMS, the 55-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld at the request of the family, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
