Winnipeg, February 8, 2024 - An off-duty RCMP officer was assaulted by two individuals, while he was trying to help during a situation near a school. The two were arrested and later released as mandated by the Criminal Code, and are back on Winnipeg streets.


The Winnipeg Police responded to a call reporting an assault in the 800 block of Buchanan Boulevard around 3:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male victim suffering from upper-body injuries sustained during the assault. The victim, an off-duty RCMP officer, received medical treatment for his injuries.


The incident, which occurred during school dismissal, prompted school administrators to initiate hold and secure protocols to ensure the safety of students. Police officers present also assisted in traffic control measures to facilitate the safe dismissal of students amidst the unfolding situation.


Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspects had been causing a disturbance near the school premises from their vehicle. Upon the off-duty officer's intervention and request for them to vacate the area due to their disruptive behavior close to the school, the situation escalated rapidly. The suspects exited their vehicle, verbally threatened the officer, and physically assaulted him. Several bystanders intervened in an attempt to halt the assault.


As a result of the investigation, a 39-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing charges including Assault Peace Officer, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, and Causing a Disturbance. Similarly, a 44-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing charges of Assault Peace Officer, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Causing a Disturbance, Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired, and Impairment with Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Equal to or Over 80 mgs.
