Winnipeg, December 14, 2023 - A veteran member of the Winnipeg Police Service finds himself on the other side of the law after being arrested for impaired driving on December 8. Oleksii Gerasymchuk, 39, a two-year member of the force, is now facing charges related to operating a vehicle while impaired.

The incident unfolded late in the evening of December 8, when the Winnipeg Police Service received a call about a suspected impaired driver leaving a business establishment located in the 1300 block of Henderson Highway. Officers promptly responded to the call.

Upon arriving at the scene, attending officers initiated an investigation into the matter. The driver in question was soon identified as Oleksii Gerasymchuk, an off-duty member of the Winnipeg Police Service. Subsequently, Gerasymchuk was arrested at a residence shortly after the initial encounter. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

In light of the incident involving one of their own, the Winnipeg Police Service Professional Standards Unit was notified and took over the investigation. Following a thorough review of the case, charges were authorized by Manitoba Prosecution Services against Gerasymchuk.

The off-duty officer now faces two charges, namely:

  • Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both.

  • Within 2 hours of Ceasing to Operate a Conveyance is Impaired with BAC Equal or Over 80mgs.

In a move aimed at ensuring transparency and impartiality, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified of the incident. The IIU has taken a monitoring role in the ongoing investigation, which is expected to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case.

Gerasymchuk is scheduled to appear in court to face the charges against him.
