Patient Dies in St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Room
Patient Dies waiting for care.

Winnipeg, January 21, 2024 - A patient lost their life while waiting in the emergency room at St. Boniface Hospital, as confirmed by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) early Friday morning. The patient, who had undergone several diagnostic tests, had spent approximately five hours in the emergency department before the unfortunate event unfolded.

As per standard procedure, an investigation will be conducted to determine if this incident meets the criteria of a critical incident. Kerstin Jordan, Regional Lead for Patient Safety for the Winnipeg Health Region, expressed condolences to the patient's family, emphasizing the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals striving for the best outcomes.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another patient's death at Grace Hospital in November, which prompted a WRHA investigation due to a lengthy 33-hour wait.

A recent provincial report covering October 1 to December 31, 2022, revealed a total of 10 deaths classified as critical incidents.
