Winnipeg, December 13, 2023 - Winnipeg Police's Retail Theft Initiative, launched in November in collaboration with the Retail Council of Canada and local businesses, has had significant results. On Tuesday, December 12, at around 9:00 p.m., the initiative lead to the apprehension an adult male shoplifter in the 800 block of Leila Avenue.

Police responded to the theft report and caught the suspect after a brief foot chase in the 2300 block of McPhillips Street. The Property Crime Unit subsequently linked the suspect, identified as David Schmidt, 31, of Winnipeg, to a series of retail thefts dating back to October.

David Schmidt, who had previously been arrested on December 9 and charged with thirteen Theft Under $5,000 offenses, now faces an additional nine such charges and two Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order offenses. Schmidt is currently in custody awaiting legal proceedings.

The total value of stolen merchandise from various businesses involved in these incidents is estimated to exceed $23,000. The proactive efforts of the Winnipeg Police Service, in conjunction with local stakeholders, have made significant strides in tackling retail theft within the city.
