Winnipeg, March 20, 2024 - The Winnipeg Police, in collaboration with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, responded to a call concerning an unresponsive infant at a residence located on Westgrove Way on February 2, 2022,. The three-month-old female was promptly taken to the hospital where the baby was pronounced dead several days later.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation into the sudden demise of Layla Mattern Muise, aged three months. Subsequent autopsy and toxicology assessments revealed that Layla's passing was a consequence of exposure to fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The investigation undertaken by the Child Abuse Unit lead to consultations with the Manitoba Prosecution Service. Ultimately, charges were authorized against both parents in connection with the case.

On March 19, 2024, Christopher Joseph Mattern, aged 39, and Alison Kimberly Muise, aged 40, were apprehended and formally charged with Fail to Provide the Necessaries of Life.
