Winnipeg, February 25, 2024 - RCMP made a significant breakthrough in thwarting human smuggling activities in Winnipeg. At approximately 2:00 am, an officer conducting routine patrols initiated a traffic stop on McGillivray Boulevard in the city.

Police discovered that the vehicle in question contained a total of nine individuals squeezed into the cramped confines. Among them were seven males, aged between 25 and 36, and one female aged 33. What raised immediate concerns was that seven of these individuals were identified as foreign nationals hailing from the Republic of Chad, while one was from the Republic of Mali.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Abdi Hassan Ali, a resident of Winnipeg, was taken into custody on charges of human smuggling under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). Ali made his initial court appearance in Winnipeg on February 23.

The other eight individuals found in the vehicle were also taken into custody under the Customs Act. However, they were later transported to an Immigration Support Center in Winnipeg, where they were released from RCMP custody.

RCMP officials have emphasized that investigations into the matter are ongoing, with a focus on uncovering any potential networks or accomplices involved in the smuggling attempt.
