Winnipeg, APril 4, 2024 - The Manitoba RCMP responded to a distressing incident on April 1, 2024, at approximately 9:55 pm, when Powerview RCMP received a report of an assault at a residence on Highway 11 in the RM of Alexander.

Upon arrival, officers found a severely injured adult female outside the residence, with an adult male holding a young child. What unfolded next was a harrowing scene as officers attempted to apprehend the suspect and ensure the safety of all involved.

The male, identified as a 36-year-old individual, was identified as the suspect by officers. However, upon their approach, he fled into the residence with the child, refusing all attempts to hand over the child to family members or police.

Described as agitated and erratic, the suspect made threats towards officers and family members. When he momentarily put the child down, swift action was taken by an officer to secure the child and ensure her safety. Despite attempts to subdue the suspect using a Conducted Energy Weapon, it proved ineffective as the suspect assaulted officers through biting and punching.

The suspect then fled to a shed behind the residence, prompting a containment effort by officers who called for additional backup and Police Dog Services. With the assistance of Police Service Dog Mack, the suspect was located hiding in the shed. However, his resistance persisted as he continued to assault officers even during his arrest.

As a result of this incident, the adult female sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital before being transferred to Winnipeg for further treatment. Several officers also sustained minor injuries, with one officer requiring treatment and later release from the hospital.

The 36-year-old male suspect has been charged with a range of offenses including Attempted Murder, Assault on Peace Officer Causing Bodily Harm, Assault on Peace Officer (x4), Uttering Threats (x3), Resisting Arrest, and Mischief. He has been remanded into custody, with his identity withheld to protect the privacy of the victims involved.
