Record Number of Vacant Structure Fires in Winnipeg


Friday, September 15, 2023 - The number of vacant structure fires has reached 104 already in 2023, in 2022 there were a reported 84 and 64 in 2021.


Winnipeg Fire crews were kept busy battling two more fires in vacant homes and continue their work at the WIndsor Hotel.


Fire officials said that around 10:15 p.m. on September 13, 2023, WFPS responded to a structure fire in a vacant house on Alexander Avenue.


Crews attacked the fire from the inside while searching for occupants. No one was found inside and no injuries were reported.


The cause of the fire is under investigation.


Winnipeg Fire responded to the second fire shortly before 7:30 a.m. on yesterday at a single family vacant home on Parr Street.


Firefighters searched the building and no one was located. No injuries were reported.

Update: Windsor Hotel


Overnight, a contractor completed emergency demolition of the Windsor Hotel at 187 Garry Street. The WFPS ordered an emergency demolition of the building to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to ensure the scene was safe when crews departed.


Manitoba Hydro restored power to the Beacon Hill Lodge.
