Winnipeg, January 1, 2024 -Yesterday, at approximately 2:22 p.m., the Winnipeg Police were responding to a 911 call that would eventually escalate into a tragic incident. The call was made regarding a male individual who was reportedly acting erratically, and there were concerns that he might be armed, with other individuals present in the apartment suite located in the first 100 block of University Crescent.


As officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by an armed male, leading to a tense and rapidly evolving situation. During this confrontation, one of the responding officers discharged their firearm, resulting in the male being struck by a gunshot. Swiftly, the officers on the scene shifted their focus to providing immediate medical care to the injured individual while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all other parties present. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported during the incident.


Despite the prompt medical attention provided, the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries.


The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was notified and has taken on the responsibility of conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. As such, the IIU will be responsible for gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing all pertinent details to determine the events that led to this tragic outcome.


Authorities have urged the public to direct any follow-up inquiries or information regarding this incident to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU). This measure is in line with the standard protocols in place to maintain the integrity of the investigation and ensure that all aspects of this unfortunate event are thoroughly scrutinized.
