Temporary Encampment Fire on Riverbank

A temporary encampment on the riverbank near Assiniboine avenue went up in flames early this morning.

Fire crews arrived at the encampment just before 12:30 am to find several tents engulfed in flames and smoke. The residents had all safely evacuated prior to the fire department's arrival.

Temporary encampments are at a heightened risk for fires. Most often, shelters have just one way in and out and are assembled using flammable materials which burn quickly.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
