Friday, January 6, 2023 - Winnipeg Police said a transit passenger was creating a disturbance by smoking and holding a knife.
Police said the bus came to a stop near Portage Avenue and Kennedy Street. Then a second call was made to police, indicating the man had taken two knives out of a backpack and concealed them on himself – one in his waistband and the other near one of his socks.
Upon arrival, the police unit observed the suspect walking northbound on Kennedy Street from Portage Avenue. The male was uncooperative with officers and placed his hands near his ankle/sock area, where he had concealed one of the knives. A conducted energy weapon (“Taser”) was subsequently used to take him into custody safely, and the knife (folding style) was seized.
Officers also located a second knife (hunting style) in his front waistband and a can of bear spray in his backpack.
Samuel Hapa, a 19-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with: - Possession of a Weapon (x3) - Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order (x6) He was detained.
