Winnipeg Man Charged For Multiple Break & Enters


Sunday, November 13, 2022 - A 31 year old Winnipeg man responsible for multiple break and enters between September and November of this year has been charged.


Between September and November 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service received numerous reports of Commercial Break & Enter incidents in various parts of the city where the suspect had gained access to premises using similar entry methods.

Incidents:

- Between August 24 and 25, a male suspect attended to a residence in the 300 block of Ashland Avenue, stole a 2007 Honda CBR600RR valued at over $5000.00 and removed it from the property (R22-43736 refers).

- On September 23, a male suspect attended a business in the first 100 block of Scurfield Boulevard and accessed the building through an insecure door. Approximately $1000.00 worth of tobacco products was stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-220471 refers)

- On October 10, a male suspect attended to a business in the 2100 block of Pembina Highway and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. Approximately $6000.00 worth of tobacco products were stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-235392 refers)

- On October 16 and 18, a male suspect attended a business in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue and gained access by breaching the roof hatch causing approximately $2000.00 in damage. A light fixture and two gumball machines were stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-242744 refers)

- On October 21, a male suspect attended a business in the 700 block of Pembina Highway and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. The suspect smashed a glass watch display causing approximately $4000.00 in damage. Numerous watches (an unknown value) were stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-244963 refers)

- On October 23, a male suspect attended a business in the 1700 block of Kenaston Boulevard and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. Approximately $23,500.00 worth of electronics was stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-246502 refers)

- On October 24, a male suspect attended a business in the 2500 block of Portage Avenue and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. Approximately $10,500.00 worth of electronics was stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-247345 refers)

- On October 27, a male suspect attended a business in the 2600 block of Pembina Highway and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. Approximately $12,150.00 worth of electronics was stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-250040 refers)

- On November 1, a male suspect attended a business in the first 100 block of Sage Creek Boulevard and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. A yet-to-be-determined amount of merchandise was stolen and removed from the premises. (C22-254598 refers)

- On November 3, a male suspect attended a business in the 6600 block of Roblin Boulevard and gained access by breaching the roof hatch. A razor valued at approximately $20.00 was stolen and removed from the premises.The male suspect was observed fleeing the premises in a red vehicle. (C22-259175 refers).

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and identified a suspect male involved in the above-mentioned incidents.

On November 11, North District General Patrol officers located the suspect operating an unlicensed red 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. Officers initiated a traffic stop in the rear lane of Redwood Avenue at Salter Street and placed the suspect under arrest without incident.

Investigators obtained and executed search warrants for the vehicle and the suspect’s residence in the 500 block of Aberdeen Avenue. The stolen motorcycle, stolen property, break-in instruments, and personal clothing/articles used during the incidents were located within the car and residence and seized as evidence.

Investigators estimate the value of the stolen property at over $66,000.00.

Matthew Dean CHORNEYKO-CHAULK, 31, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:

- Break, Enter & Commit – Place x 11

- Possession of Break-In Instruments

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000.00

- Provincial Offence Notice issued for Highway Traffic Act offences x 4

He was detained in custody.
