Winnipeg Police Officer Involved in Shooting During a Traffic Stop Leaves One Dead

Winnipeg, November 28, 2023 - Man dies following an officer involved shooting shortly after midnight today during a traffic stop near the intersection of Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive.


According to preliminary reports, the occupants of the vehicle made an attempt to evade the police, leading to a confrontation. During the chaos, an officer was pinned by the suspect vehicle, prompting the officer to discharge of a firearm. The bullet struck the adult male driver.


Efforts were made by Winnipeg Police to provide immediate emergency medical care to the injured driver. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, the man died from his injuries.


The female passenger in the vehicle has been taken into police custody for further questioning.


One member of the Winnipeg Police Service was injured during the attempt to stop the vehicle. The officer, who was pinned, sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital in stable condition.


The situation has prompted the involvement of the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), responsible for impartial investigations into incidents involving police officers. The IIU has been duly notified and has taken charge of the investigation, urging any further inquiries to be directed to their authority.
