Winnipeg, December 5, 2023 - The Winnipeg Police Service's Major Crimes Unit successfully concluded a probe into a series of violent commercial robberies with the arrest of Jayden Smith, 18, from Winnipeg. Smith was taken into custody on December 1 without incident in the 600 block of William Avenue, related to the stabbing of a 59-year-old female employee during a robbery on November 29 in the 600 block of Notre Dame Avenue.

Smith faces multiple charges including two counts of robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon. Notably, investigators linked Smith to another robbery at a retail store on November 19 in the 300 block of Donald Street, involving a hammer and an axe. During this incident, a 28-year-old security guard was assaulted and robbed of his phone, though thankfully not injured.

Despite the lack of prior acquaintance between Smith and the victims, his actions were deemed violent and targeted. The police urge anyone with additional information on these incidents to come forward.

Smith was released on an Undertaking as per the Criminal Code but was later re-arrested on December 2 in the same block without incident. He currently remains in custody at this time.
