Winnipeg, May 7, 2024 - A family dispute escalated into a violent confrontation with police, resulting in injuries and multiple charges, according to a report from the Winnipeg Police Service.

The incident occurred on May 5, 2024, around 3:20 p.m., when officers were called to a residence on Boyd Avenue in response to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an intoxicated adult male. Upon arrival, officers found the individual, later identified as 18-year-old Haidyn Bingley Blackbird of Winnipeg, engaged in a physical altercation with a family member at the back of the house.

As police intervened to separate the individuals, Blackbird became increasingly aggressive. He physically confronted the officers, managing to disarm one of them of their Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) and used it against them. During the struggle, he also bit two officers in the upper body and made repeated threats to their lives.

Despite the challenges, the officers successfully subdued and arrested Blackbird. Three officers sustained injuries during the encounter, with two requiring hospital treatment; they were later released after receiving care.

Blackbird, described as highly agitated and under the influence of various substances at the time of the incident, was taken to a hospital. He required sedation due to his level of intoxication and was later medically cleared by hospital staff before being processed by the police.

The charges against Blackbird include three counts of assault on a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He has been detained in custody pending further legal proceedings.
