Youth Charged with Killing Animals

Friday, July 14, 2023 - A group of children, ranging in age from 9-13 were involved in the torture and killing of puppies in Mosakahiken Cree Nation earlier this month.

The investigation determined that a group of children hunted, tortured and killed 4 puppies in the community. Community members caught them hurting the puppies earlier in the day and they were chased away. Later, the puppies were found deceased. One of the puppies was fund hanging from a stop sign. All of the puppies had been significantly injured before death.

As per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, anyone under 12 years of age cannot be charged. The 13-year-old youth involved was arrested and charged with Killing Animals and Cruelty to Animals, Causing Unnecessary Suffering.

"This is a very concerning act for the RCMP and the community," said Sergeant Rick Sinclair, Moose Lake RCMP Detachment Commander. "Many community members care deeply for their dogs. We appreciate the assistance we received during the investigation. We are working with the community and our partners to find a way forward, focusing on healing and providing resources to families."
