27-year-old Suspect Fatally Shot After Altercation with Law Enforcement; Investigations Underway by Manitoba RCMP and Independent Investigation Unit.
Fatal Shooting Incident Unfolds in Sandy Bay First Nation: RCMP Officer Involved

Winnipeg, April 22, 2024 - On Saturday, April 20th, Amaranth RCMP responded to a call for assistance from the Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS) regarding a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence in Sandy Bay First Nation. Upon arrival, both RCMP and MFNPS officers found that the suspect had fled the scene.


Police began a search to locate the 27-year-old male suspect in an open outdoor area within Sandy Bay First Nation. The suspect was armed with multiple weapons, prompting an encounter between himself and police.


During the altercation, an RCMP officer discharged their firearm, resulting in the suspect sustaining fatal injuries despite attempts by officers to administer life-saving measures. No officers sustained physical injuries during the incident.


Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services is presently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the encounter. Additionally, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is conducting its own inquiry into the matter, thereby limiting the RCMP's ability to provide further details at this time.
