Winnipeg, May 2, 2024 - The City of Winnipeg has unveiled plans for the expansion of the St. James Civic Centre. With construction slated to start this winter and a completion target for fall 2026, the project aims to cater to the growing needs of the community.

Residents are invited to attend an information session on May 16, 2024, at the St. James Civic Center, located at 2055 Ness Ave. The session, running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., will offer a first look at the final design of the expanded facility. This event will provide an opportunity for community members to see how their feedback has been integrated into the design and to learn about the upcoming construction phases.

The expansion will include several new features: additional multi-purpose and meeting rooms, a studio, a modern kitchen, and an expanded viewing area for the swimming pool. It will also see improvements to the hall, main building entry, washrooms, and parking lot. Moreover, the project will enhance the administrative space and shared program space for the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre.

The expansion is a response to the need for upgraded and more versatile community spaces, confirmed by public feedback and growing usage rates. "This project is a crucial step towards meeting the evolving recreational and social needs of our community," stated a city official.

Funding for the expansion comes from a $14 million contribution announced in July 2021 by the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, and the City of Winnipeg, with an additional $3 million approved by the City Council in October 2023.

Construction will be executed in stages to minimize disruption to ongoing programs and services. However, residents should anticipate some impact on current offerings during the construction period.
