WInnipeg, May 1, 2024 - A K-9 member of the RCMP, Marook, helped rescue a baby after a man flees into a wooded area. RCMP successfully apprehended the male suspect who had threatened residents with a firearm and fled with an infant, in Winnipegosis. This unfolded on afternoon of April 18, when police were called at around 2:35 pm about the dangerous situation.

According to reports, the suspect, a 26-year-old male, made threats to use a firearm against the occupants of a home, though it was unclear if he had actual access to a weapon. Following the threats, the suspect fled the scene with an infant, triggering immediate action from the Winnipegosis RCMP.

The tension escalated when RCMP officers located the suspect's vehicle a short distance from the residence. They witnessed the suspect abandoning the vehicle and escaping on foot into dense, bushy terrain, carrying the infant who was notably underdressed for the prevailing sub-zero temperatures.

Police Service Dog Marook, alongside his handler, initiated a track through the rugged, heavily treed area. After an intense pursuit covering approximately two kilometers, K-9 officer Marook and his handler located the suspect and the infant.

The man was arrested without incident, and it was confirmed he was not in possession of a firearm at the time of apprehension. The infant, fortunately, appeared unharmed despite the harsh conditions and was immediately handed over to Emergency Medical Services as officers carefully navigated their way out of the bush.

The suspect now faces multiple charges including Flight From Peace Officer, Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm, and Uttering Threats Against a Person. He remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
