Winnipeg April 30, 2024 - Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie has unveiled an initiative aimed at nurturing safer, healthier communities across Manitoba. The "From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All" program is set to prioritize revitalization efforts and community building in high-needs neighborhoods, marking a significant step towards fostering environments where individuals, children, youth, and families can thrive.
Bushie emphasized the government's dedication to grassroots community development, stating, "Our government is committed to revitalizing and supporting communities to create healthier and safer neighborhoods in Manitoba. It is our goal to uplift Manitobans where and when they need us most."
With an investment of $12.5 million, the program will target the revitalization of high-needs neighborhoods and support community infrastructure and initiatives geared towards poverty and crime reduction. Grants provided through the program will aid initiatives focusing on community capacity building, economic development, well-being and recreation, as well as housing and safety coordination supports.
Rushana Newman, Executive Director of the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its alignment with community-driven revitalization efforts. Newman stated, "From the Ground Up is clearly built in the true spirit of community revitalization. We look forward to leveraging these funds within our community to build a better Brandon."
The program, which begins accepting applications today, welcomes eligible applicants such as non-profit organizations, Northern Affairs community councils, and municipalities. The intake deadline is set for May 31.
Under "From the Ground Up," applicants can seek funding across three streams: Community Renewal Initiatives, Community Spaces, and Healthy, Safe, Connected Children and Youth. Additionally, the program will allocate $800,000 towards strategic partnerships aimed at expanding after-school and weekend programs for children and youth in high-needs areas of Winnipeg, Brandon, and Thompson.
Minister Bushie highlighted that the program builds upon the foundation of the former Building Sustainable Communities program, with a renewed focus on supporting community renewal initiatives and enhancing neighborhoods most in need. The launch of "From the Ground Up" signifies a significant commitment by the Manitoba government towards fostering inclusive, vibrant communities across the province.
