PC Party Promises Increased Funding for Winnipeg Transit

Friday, September 29, 2023 - A re-elected PC government would invest $8.8 million over four years to establish new Winnipeg Transit routes in underserved and burgeoning areas of the city. Andrew Smith, the PC candidate for Lagimodière, emphasized the party's commitment to enhancing Winnipeg's transit system to foster growth and meet Vision 2030 objectives.

Under this plan, the PC government will allocate $2.2 million annually to support transit lines in key areas, including Aurora, Castlebury Meadows, Waterford Green in northern Winnipeg, and Prairie Pointe in Waverley West. This initiative addresses the transit accessibility challenges faced by constituents, like Catalina Garcia from McPhillips, who currently have to endure long walks to reach the nearest bus stops.

Sheilah Restall, PC candidate for McPhillips, highlighted the significance of these new transit lines, acknowledging the considerable distances residents in the Aurora neighborhood have to cover to access public transportation. She expressed pride in being part of a team dedicated to addressing these issues promptly.

This announcement builds on the PC party's ongoing support for transit in Manitoba. In 2020, the party provided $34 million to municipalities over two years to alleviate transit shortfalls resulting from economic challenges. Additionally, the PCs introduced the Police Services Amendment Act, expanding the authority of community safety officers to enforce provincial laws and bylaws, thereby enabling municipalities to create specialized teams like the Community Safety Team led by Robert Christmas in Winnipeg.

As advanced polls have already opened, the provincial election is set to take place on October 3rd, 2023.
