WInnipeg, May 10, 2024 - City authorities have mandated the immediate evacuation of a Portage Avenue apartment building following the discovery of significant structural deterioration. The building, located at 2440 Portage Ave., has been deemed unsafe under the Winnipeg Building By-law and the Emergency Management By-law.

The decision comes after a third-party engineering report highlighted extensive structural issues throughout the property, prompting concerns for resident safety. "The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we must act swiftly to mitigate any potential risks," said a city official overseeing the evacuation process.

Effective immediately, residents are instructed to vacate the premises and are prohibited from re-entering until further notice. The city has also imposed a requirement for continuous monitoring of the building’s condition, with instructions to the property owner to report any changes directly to city authorities.

In response to the crisis, the City of Winnipeg is taking proactive measures to support displaced residents. A reception centre has been set up to provide temporary accommodations and connect individuals with essential services and support systems. "We understand the disruption this causes and are working diligently to ensure that affected residents receive the assistance they need during this challenging time," the official added.

City officials are also contacting residents in neighboring properties along Assiniboine Crescent, placing them on evacuation watch and advising them to prepare for possible relocation should the building's condition worsen.

The timeline for necessary repairs and eventual re-occupancy of the building remains uncertain, with estimates suggesting that it may take several months to rectify the identified issues. Residents and tenants of the building are advised to stay in contact with the property owner or building manager for updates and further information.

As the situation develops, city officials will continue to provide updates and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to guarantee public safety and address the structural concerns of the building.
