Winnipeg, May 1, 2024 - Lyle Bauer, the revered former player and president of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has died at age 65, his family confirmed.

Bauer's storied career with the Bombers spanned nearly a decade on the field and continued into the boardroom, where he played a crucial role in revitalizing the franchise during financial turmoil starting in 2000.

A formidable presence on the offensive line, Bauer wore number 59 from 1982 until 1991, contributing to three championship victories. His legacy extended beyond the field after a public cancer battle led him to establish the Never Alone Foundation, which has provided support to thousands of cancer patients across Manitoba.

“Lyle’s memory will endure through the countless lives he touched and his unwavering commitment to community service,” the Foundation expressed in a statement. Remembered for his toughness and dedication, Bauer was inducted into the Blue Bombers Hall of Fame in 1998. His impact on the community and the sport will be remembered as the hallmark of his legacy. Forever #59, his loss is mourned by fans and survivors alike, marking the end of an era for the Blue Bombers and the broader sports community.
