Winnipeg, May 6, 2024 - Sunday evening, May 5, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) rescued a person from the fast-moving currents of the Assiniboine River near the Donald Street bridge.


The incident began at 5:26 p.m. when the WFPS were alerted to the presence of an individual struggling in the river. Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the victim who was being swept downstream towards the confluence with the Red River.


Utilizing specialized water rescue gear, the paramedics and firefighters executed a precise and timely operation. They managed to secure and extract the individual from the perilous grip of the river’s current. The rescue team brought the person to safety on the riverbank, where immediate medical assessment and intervention were provided.


The rescued individual was found to be in critical condition and was promptly transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Details surrounding how or why the person ended up in the river remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
